Nestled in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains, Breckenridge vacation homes offer access to skiing, shopping, and plenty of unique historical sites. Settlers first established this mining community in 1859, but it wasn’t until the 1930s when locals realized the area’s value as a ski resort. Breckenridge has one of the Colorado’s largest National Historic Districts with nearly 250 structures on the National Registry of Historic Places.
Vacation homes in Breckenridge are tourist gold in the early 21st century, but in the mid-19th century it was real gold that lured people to Breckenridge. The Country Boy Gold Mine just north of the downtown business district is a prime example of what life was like for miners. The mine was opened in 1889 and closed in 1948 after federal subsidies for gold mining dried up, but Country Boy continues “mining for tourists,” just a few miles away from some of the most modern Breckenridge vacation rentals.
Nowadays the Breckenridge Ski Resort is the main attraction, with more than 2,300 skiable acres, five terrain parks, and four half pipes for snowboarders. The skiers here tend to gravitate toward more extreme skiing, although families can also take advantage of the Ski & Ride School to teach their children to ski. For visitors who want to visit the resort any time of year, there are free gondola rides that take passengers on a scenic ride from Main Street to the base of Peak 8.
For visitors who prefer to spend some more time in town, especially during the off peak season, the town of Breckenridge has over 200 specialty shops and boutiques and 75 eateries to choose from. The Breckenridge Recreation Center is the go-to place for travelers looking for indoor sports such as swimming, basketball, racquetball, tennis, wall climbing, weightlifting and aerobic exercises.
There are a number of Breckenridge vacation rental homes and condos to choose from; a high rise hotel would just feel out of place in this mountain town. Many of the lodge and cabin-style rental properties in Breckenridge are right along the path that the gondolas take up the mountain. In fact, a gondola ride is the best way to see the lay of the land and observe what types of Breckenridge vacation rentals are currently available. From a cozy condo to a spacious six-bedroom cabin, one thing is certain—the mountain view will be spectacular.
